Project 1: Reading the Contexts of Traditional Streets

As the first project of this module, we were assigned with a series of tasks to familiar ourselves into the identity study of a place with regard to the contexts of Traditional a given street. Through observation, we need to capture the place identity in Physical Contexts which is the architecture façade and style, religious building, market and shop house; Non-Physical Contexts which is Traditional trade, local cuisine, historical event and social institution on the traditional street that we chosen. Then, express and transform all of our observations, studies and research information into a sketches journal and produce a written summary.
I conduct a deep research on the street I choose, Jalan Tun H.S. Lee on all the aspect from the begin until the end of the street and extract the most interesting contexts element from the street. For me, I wanted my work is well sketches, eye catching and easy to understand. When I look back to my work, I easy expecting It telling me back want is the identity of the traditional street that I have studied.

For me, this is absolutely a great starting for us to get know on the idea of this subject by introduce us how to read and clarify the important “lexicons” that built up the specific place identity and sociocultural meanings of the respective place by research through a specific case study. I believed that this project was set to prepare us well to deliver our research and understanding through sketches effectively and get us ready for the coming up project.
