Project 1:

Diagramming Architectural Principles

To understand how architecture and spaces are created from design intention, we were introduced to “Architectural Diagramming” in the first assignment of Architecture Design II. In a group of 5 members we were assigned with a series of task to produce diagrams of the assigned building, Tree House C, from the architect’s sensitivity to the experience of inhabitation, by abstracting and simplifying an architectural building into diagrams make it easier to be understood on the function of the building parallel to its form, principles, perceived pattern, and architectural intent behind the design of the architect.

Students were required to study the background of the building and produce a complete set of orthographic drawing: -

  • Site plan

  • Floor plans

  • Section

  • Elevation

  • Perspective

From the background of the building and architectural drawing, Student are required to investigate, analyses and diagram its: -

  • Concept

  • Structure

  • Context

  • Space Planning

  • Circulation

5 Diagrammatic model is in-cooperated into this assignment to enhance our level of understanding to task.

Process

At the very beginning of this project, our group was assigned with a building in Bali, Treehouse C. Before we schedule a meeting, all of us were having a research on the background of Treehouse C to get to know a bout some the information of this building.

In the meeting we have distribute the task evenly to all of the group member. Among all the task, I am the one who focus mainly on the Perspective drawing and Site Plan. At the same time, as volunteer I have did lot of researching  on the DNA of the architect, the purpose of this building and also  the design thinking of the Designer when designing Treehouse C.

As the one who doing site plan, I have also provide all the site information to my groupmate, especially for those who working on the site analysis. Rather then that, all of us were well communicated in every meeting, discussion on the diagram that we going to produce. Therefore, everyone are able to involve in the diagramming part.

Every idea and suggestion of us were taking into consideration to produce a best best outcome.

However, I was also work on the perspective drawing of this building after I received the floor plan from my groupmate, Pang Wen Xuan.

In the perspective drawing, I have capture all the contour, features, condition and also the environment of the site. Purposely to allow those do not know about the Tree house C experience the environment of the building through the drawing.

Reflection

Through this project, I learned how to trace one architect’s design thinking, concept, their technique responding to their site and converting all the analyses in a simpler form through diagramming just only study on the background of the building. Besides, this teaches me that all the building was not done in a day but have to develop a long way from design thinking to the simple diagrams until it become a physical building.

After this assignment, I felt my foundation to architecture was strengthen again, as I was learning from this collaborative assignment when I was facing some problem, everyone in the group was always willing to give their patience explaining to me and others members as well. For me, this assignment was optimized allowing all the group member to communicate, discuss and learn from each other along the project, this will be the best learning process especially for the new knowledge.
