Project 01:
Expressions through Design Elements and Principles
Every design built with design element and principle. To familiar student with both of the design foundation, we were required to paired up 6 pairs of one design element and on design principle and to be build on a space of 1000 cm3. Students would need to explore the meaning of each element and principle and adopt their understanding on the design to define each well. To trigger the critical thinking of us tattoo stamp was required to produced from the model which also carry the meaning of each pair of design element and principle.
Test Model
Mass + Proportion
Mass is a group of volume while proportion is a series of element in different size. However, from the test model can see that I was misunderstood on the meaning of both element and principle and produce a mazy model with space. Finally came out with a right model that comply with the element and principle that I paired which is more tidy by following the grid.

Shape + Emphasis
In the beginning, I was trying to produce a model with similar shape but different size and direction. Yet, during the tutorial, I was told that the my model was seem more like space and emphasis which there were space within the shape. So, i do a correction on my model by making my shape with a piece of board without any volume to size up the element and principle.

Material + Form
In this pair, the element and principle can be defined well yet, the test model not buildable and seem like to form putting together. Then, I make all the corner touched the boundary of the space of 1000cm3 to use the space effectively and enlarge the base and lower the center of gravity to make the model more stable and buildable.

Line + Realistic
In the beginning, I was so confused on the meaning of realistic which I never learn in foundation. So I try to make something real, look like an eye ball to get comment from tutor better to follow my heart than I stand on the ground no stepping forward.

Texture + Unity
Confused between texture and pattern make me lose from the start and the suggestion from tutor that not to wasting time to make so many little thing. And put it off all the way until last minute to produce a model that make square with a series of rectangle balsa wood slate and at the same time give a tidy texture, wooden surface,

Test Model
Space + Meaning
Space is the volume surrounded by design element while meaning is the value to bring out to the viewer. I trying to give a value that "cannot judge a book by its cover" as we can get a wider view form the smaller opening a narrower instead from the wider opening. Yet, I modified the model to a exposure of a cube to unwrap its mask and expose its real body.

Reflection
I do agree that It was a great assignment setting for us as a freshman in architecture as it create a strong foundation for us to face the challenge in our future architect life. I also agree its time for us to cultivate a habit to conduct a self-learning. Yet, it will become a bigger challenge in our future as we confused on the meaning of each design element and principle without any guidance but just to explore from internet by our own.
