Project 02:

Tectonics: Design Principles, Anthropometric and Ergonomic Exploration

Picture3.jpg

We are the one who is the best to feel the experience the space designed by us before we design to other and to study the anthropometry and ergonomics on our own body before study others. In project 02 we were required to measure our own body and design a structure for our own by using the skill and experience gained from project 01. Tectonic detailed and the material use should be consider while designing the structure to make the whole structure stable and constructible.

Design Intention

Spinal Cord

Spinal is the most important part in our body. However, we as a architecture student may always rusting for our assignment on the chair and it would result our lower back pain. Consequently, bad sleeping quality may result. Therefore, I was intended to designed a structured which can reduce our back pain and enhance our sleeping quality by maintain our back borne in natural curve.

Inspiration

Reclined Position (zero gravity)

Reclined position is concept of zero gravity which is designed by NASA to distribute the weight of the astronomic by lessen the body weight on the back when launching to the space. Meanwhile, this position is the best to reduce force act on the back borne and keep deep relaxation and healing in physical and mental. Beside, also maintain the natural curve of the spinal with the curve of the body.

Parametric Design

The is the best design method to design a structure with organic curve at the same time give a aesthetic visual effect.

Test Model

Sketching, Measure, and Test

I was trying to sketch out the curve of the spinal and fuse both design together to test whether the feasibility and at the same time to skilled the technique constructing structure with slates.

Various

After, experiment the feasibility of both design and the constructing technique. I was curious about the effect by various the gap between each gap which narrower for the important part, the back and and neck and wider at the neck. However, it does not give a great impulse for me.

Final Design

Final Sketch

After all the test model I came out with a final design which was maintained the body shape and provide a series of different experience in each space which is open space, semi-private space and private space. Grid was suggested by my tutor, Mr. Chern which is easier for me to calculate the measurement of each single slate.  I was playing with the length of the wooden slat to varies the privacy of each space and create a great visual effect on the shape design which is following the spinal shape.

This was the model came by wooden slate to create all the curve that was desirable. And also totally is the clone of the model in my mind during planning.

Tectonic Detail

All of the tectonic detain was inspired by the joint and joinery from the internet. Yet all of this was modified to adopted in to my design structure.

Reflection

In project 02, I was skilled with the technique I use. Yet, I gained a lesson that is not to focus too much on one part and lose sight of other. Like the technical drawing I produce which is like the comment from the crit, as it is so much different with my model. It is a great setting for us to learn such lesson and experience before we proceed to a bigger project.
