Preliminary Studies - Medan Pasar
The entire project started with this individual assignment that focuses on investigating basic notions of the city and learning from precedents around the world purposely to introduce this new knowledge in architecture to students more clearly.
This assignment was aimed at introducing students to the basics of urban design and its relation to architecture. Secondly, it will study and determine the programmatic function, societal role, and spatial layout of a Community Centre and architectural responses for urban blocks.
This assignment comprises with three components: Site Documentation, Site Analysis, and Precedent Studies of Urban Blocks and Community Centre (for Creative City).

Site Documentation and Site Analysis will equip students with a firm understanding of the site they will be working with this semester

Precedent Studies will provide an insight into architectural responses for designing an urban block Community Centre for Creative City [CCCC]
In this project, site visit was conducted, and all the data collected were documented and presented. Both macro studies and micro studies have been carried out in deep. Sense is an significant data collector in this project to feel the space and come out with one key word and one urban theory out of six(social, visual, morphology, social perceptual, and temporal)
According to my data collected and sense social dimension was chosen as my urban design theory. Aside from Social Dimension by Jan Gehl, five urban elements by Kevin A. Lynch which are paths, edges, districts, nodes, and landmarks also need to be clarified these elements in the urban context of the site.
Puzzle the Forgotten Pieces of
Memories & Identity
"The light go up and the light go down"
In the site analysis of preliminary study, I use this sentence to bring out the entire idea of my site documentation and analyzation. From the site analysis, I found that this old town is being forgotten as the city developed. In nowadays society, local are busy on their own things and earning for living, younger generation are tend to go out instead of staying in this old town, while elder generation standing firm for their businesses and fight for their place as teh host of the area. Yet the impact of reality drags them down. With the increase of the immigrant, the decrease of local, and the blow of pandemic, some traditional businesses were collapsed while the vacant buildings were occupied by foreigner for their own business purpose and some being replaced by modern skyscraper.
This phenomenon tells us this site was down, the beauty of the Old Town of Kuala Lumpur City Center was being ruined.
Reflection
This assignment might be said as a good start for us to have a clear understanding on where and how we are going to collect and analyze the data and sense along this assignment from site visit, data collection, data documentation, and data analysis.
Along this, I realized how important is site revisit and being into the site to experience the warmth of life and the kindness of the local community. With sense to people, observation to the surrounding, I found that, data is not only a series of number, but data is what we feel from the site.
However, in a compact duration, it might be a huge challenge if we have misunderstanding to certain area and feel lost when we trying to put our data analysis into a specific way. This might result a serious problem to the rest of thsi semester as we are being left behind from the begining.
I'm glad that I have a kind and friendly tutorial groupmate and tutor who ready to answer my question when I am facing problem.
